Why bring a shortlist, not one topic

In most Nigerian departments the supervisor expects you to arrive with a small set of options and then helps you pick and sharpen one. Arriving with a single fixed idea leaves no room to adjust when the supervisor spots a problem; arriving with nothing wastes the first meeting. Three to five specific options is the sweet spot.

The topic generator gives you those starting points. Enter your department and the course you enjoyed most, and it returns a handful of specific directions that fit that department. They are ideas to discuss, not approved topics -- your supervisor and department decide what is acceptable.

What makes a topic workable

• It is narrow enough to finish: a named population, place, system or time period rather than a whole industry.
• The data or materials exist and you can reach them -- respondents, a dataset, a lab, a workplace, or a system you can actually build.
• It fits your department's usual project type. A computing department expects something you build and evaluate; a management department usually expects a survey-based study.
• You can state it as a question or an objective. If you cannot say what you would measure or build, the topic is still too vague.
• There is prior work to review, so Chapter Two has something to stand on.

From a generated idea to an approved topic

Take the two or three directions you like best and test each against the list above. Then narrow them: change a broad phrase like 'e-commerce in Nigeria' into a specific one such as a named sector, a named city and a defined group of users. Search for recent studies on each; if you find almost nothing, or hundreds that already answer your exact question, adjust the angle.

Will my supervisor accept a generated topic?
