SIWES can affect your CGPA if your institution includes its weighted grade points and units in the cumulative calculation. It may instead be an excluded pass/fail requirement or be treated another way. Read the current programme rule: neither the word “credit” nor “pass/fail” alone answers the question.

Check three different things

A listed credit value can contribute to an award's completion requirements without establishing the exact GPA rule. Likewise, a pass/fail result is not proof that every attempted unit is excluded. Ask the SIWES coordinator or registry for the actual calculation rule.
What two published programme documents establish
The NBTE 2020 National Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management curriculum states a pass/fail approach to SIWES and describes a possible further four-month period, at the student's expense, where other requirements have been satisfied but SIWES has been failed. Attribute that to the named curriculum and version. It does not establish what every polytechnic or university does.
The Bayero University Kano Mechanical Engineering 2024 handbook lists SIWES I and SIWES II with credit values. A credit table establishes listed units; it does not by itself confirm the specific SIWES grade treatment in CGPA. Do not infer a letter grade from the table alone.
Use the official documents in Sources as examples of what to look for. Your own programme's current instructions, including any later revision, are the ones to confirm.
A fictional semester GPA calculation
This original teaching example assumes a five-point scale in which A = 5, C = 3 and F = 0. It is not an institutional policy or a prediction of your result.
Suppose the other grade-bearing courses total 20 units and 70 weighted points. Their GPA is 70 ÷ 20 = 3.50. Now suppose a four-unit SIWES course is included in both the points and the units for that semester:

If the applicable policy instead excludes SIWES from both points and units for this calculation, the other courses remain 70 ÷ 20 = 3.50. A failed completion requirement can still have consequences even when it does not alter the average.
These are semester figures. To calculate CGPA, use the cumulative included points and units, not only this semester's totals:
CGPA = cumulative included weighted grade points ÷ cumulative included grade-bearing units
For a second fictional check, 350 prior cumulative points over 100 included units plus an included four-unit A would give 370 ÷ 104 = 3.56 after rounding. Verify your actual scale, rounding, repeat and replacement rules before using that approach on your record.
Ask a question that settles the calculation
Send your coordinator or registry a concise request:
Please confirm how SIWES is recorded for my programme and session. Does its result enter CGPA? Which grade points and attempted units are included, and what happens to a fail or repeat? Which current handbook section sets this out?
Keep the reply with your course records. A missing code in a portal or an unclear transcript line is a reason to ask, not proof that SIWES is excluded. Your friend's programme may follow a different rule.
The format directory concerns document requirements, not grading eligibility. It cannot answer the CGPA question in place of the responsible academic office.
Keep the assessment evidence complete
Confirm the components and weights with your department. Depending on its instructions, evidence may include your logbook, written report, employer assessment, Form 8, supervision and an oral review. Do not assign percentages from another school's example.
The SIWES grading guide helps identify the questions to ask. Your report should agree with the real dates, duties and role recorded during training. Required signatures come from the authorised people; a generated document cannot supply them.
If a requirement is missing or a result is disputed
Separate an incomplete report, a disputed workplace assessment and an interrupted placement. Each can need a different institutional process. Ask promptly about corrections, review, appeal, extensions or repeat training and keep the relevant evidence. Do not assume a resubmission will be accepted or that a purchased report can replace an incomplete placement.
For report comments, use the SIWES correction workflow. If the placement itself ended early, tell your coordinator what happened and ask what authorised next step is available. Never invent attendance, retrospective signatures or activities to close the gap.
Before submission or calculating your average
- Identify the current programme and session rule.
- Confirm the result type, units and points used in the average.
- Separate semester GPA from cumulative CGPA.
- Check fail, repeat and rounding treatment.
- Check completion and graduation requirements separately.
- Match report facts to your actual placement and logbook.
- Obtain only genuine required endorsements.
