SIWES Acknowledgement: What to Write With an Example

A SIWES report with preliminary pages and a placement activity checklist

A SIWES acknowledgement thanks the people who helped with your placement and report. Name their real contribution, keep the wording clear and follow your department's required order. It is not a place to claim approval or make your training sound more impressive.

You do not need a long list of titles to sound respectful. “Thank you for explaining the reporting procedure and reviewing my weekly records” says more than several lines of praise with no explanation.

The people you thank should match the placement your report describes. UniDraft helps organise your confirmed activities, contributions and instructions into an editable Word report. Start your SIWES report with your real records, then verify names and every statement of assistance. See the SIWES workflow for what to provide; an acknowledgement never substitutes for official approval.

Start with contributions, then add names

Make a private list before drafting:

Person or group Contribution to verify
Industry supervisor Supervision, task explanations, safety guidance or logbook review
Organisation or host unit Access to the placement and appropriate learning opportunities
Institutional supervisor or coordinator Academic guidance or placement support actually provided
Colleagues Specific help with understanding work or using permitted resources
Family or other supporters Personal support you genuinely wish to recognise

Not every row must appear. Do not invent a supervisor visit, financial support or a review of your report because a senior student's acknowledgement mentions it. Verify the spelling of names and the correct job titles; the person who supervised your daily work may not be the head of the organisation.

Some students include religious thanks. Whether and where that fits depends on personal preference and departmental requirements. No generic online example can decide the required order for every institution.

A short acknowledgement example

Illustrative wording only. The role descriptions below are not claims about your placement. Replace them with verified details and remove any contribution that did not happen.

I thank the management and staff of the organisation where I completed my industrial training for the opportunity to learn within their working environment. I am particularly grateful to my industry supervisor for explaining assigned duties, correcting my approach and guiding me on workplace safety. I also thank my departmental SIWES coordinator for guidance on the report requirements. Finally, I appreciate the personal support I received from my family during the placement and preparation of this report.

Once you insert the appropriate names, read each sentence as a factual statement. Did that person provide the help you have described? If not, change it. If a colleague helped you prepare a diagram but did not supervise you, thank them for the diagram support rather than promoting them to a supervisory role.

Make a generic sentence useful

Instead of:

I appreciate my supervisor for everything.

Try a statement that you can support:

I appreciate my supervisor's patient explanation of the inspection procedure and feedback on my weekly activity records.

That second sentence is also only an example. Use it only if those contributions happened. The point is to identify the help, not to borrow a more convincing story.

Avoid claims such as “for approving this report” unless the approval has actually happened through the required process. An acknowledgement is not a substitute for a signature, stamp, certification page or official SIWES assessment form.

Acknowledgement, dedication and abstract are different

The acknowledgement recognises assistance. A dedication, where required or permitted, is a personal tribute. The SIWES abstract summarises the placement and report. Do not repeat the same paragraph on all three pages.

The dedication examples and checklist help you draft a truthful personal tribute without inventing relationships or contributions. Follow your SIWES unit's instructions on whether to include the page.

Follow your handbook for the heading, location, page numbering and length. The main SIWES report guide explains the typical preliminary pages, but it is not your department's official template.

Check it before submission

  1. Verify every name, role and organisation name.
  2. Check that each described contribution actually happened.
  3. Remove copied names and leftover placeholders.
  4. Remove confidential details or personal contact information.
  5. Confirm the required page order and formatting.
  6. Read it aloud; shorten repeated thanks and exaggerated praise.

For a different document, use the final-year project acknowledgement guide. Project supervision and workplace supervision are not automatically the same relationship.

Where UniDraft fits

UniDraft can help organise your confirmed placement information into a written report. You remain the person who can verify names, contributions and permissions. Have your actual guidelines and work records ready before you start your SIWES report.

Frequently asked questions

Who should I thank in my SIWES acknowledgement?

Thank the people and organisations who actually supported your placement or report, explaining their contribution. Check your department's required order and verify names and roles before including them.

Can I copy a SIWES acknowledgement sample?

Use a sample to understand the structure, not to copy names, claims or relationships. Your acknowledgement should describe the support you actually received.

Does an acknowledgement mean my report is approved?

No. Thanking someone does not establish that they read, signed or approved the report. Certification and signatures must follow your institution's actual process.
