How to Write a SIWES Application/Attachment Letter

A formal application letter template with labeled sections

A SIWES application letter has one job: get a company to say yes to a placement. Formal, specific, and brief tends to work better than a long, generic letter sent to dozens of companies unchanged.

Structure

  1. Your address and date, top right or left depending on your institution's preferred format.
  2. The company's address, and a named recipient where possible (HR manager or department head) rather than "To Whom It May Concern."
  3. A clear subject line: "Application for Industrial Training (SIWES) Placement."
  4. Opening: who you are, your institution, programme, and level.
  5. The request itself: state clearly you're requesting a SIWES placement, your intended field/department, and your availability dates.
  6. Why this company, briefly -- a genuine, specific reason works better than flattery.
  7. Closing: mention any attached documents (CV, institution's introduction letter), and your contact details.

A short template

Dear [Name/Hiring Manager],

I am [Full Name], a [level] student of [Programme] at [Institution]. I am writing to request a Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) placement with [Company Name], preferably within your [Department/Unit], for the period of [start date] to [end date].

[One or two sentences on why this company/department specifically.]

I have attached my CV and my institution's introduction letter for your reference. I would be glad to provide any further information required. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely, [Full Name] [Phone / Email]

The mistake that gets applications ignored

Sending an identical, generic letter to many companies with no specific reason for that company is easy to spot and easy to ignore. Even one genuine, specific sentence about why that company or department makes a real difference to response rates.

Where UniDraft fits in

Once your placement is secured, UniDraft carries that same attention to specificity into your actual SIWES report -- built around your real placement and logbook, not generic filler.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a SIWES application letter be?

One page is standard -- a formal letter, not an essay. State who you are, what you're requesting, your programme and institution, and your availability dates clearly and briefly.

Should I attach my CV to a SIWES application letter?

Yes, where the company accepts attachments -- a short CV listing your programme, relevant coursework or skills, and contact details strengthens the application, though the letter itself should still stand on its own.

Do I need an introduction letter from my institution too?

Most institutions issue a formal introduction/request letter on your behalf, separate from your own application letter -- check with your SIWES coordinator, since many companies expect both: your personal letter and the institution's official one.
